OA Research Day 2025: Advancing Early Detection in Osteoarthritis with CircBioCare

On June 11th, 2025, the CircBioCare team proudly participated in the Osteoarthritis (OA) Research Day in Delft, an event designed to spotlight the multidisciplinary efforts driving osteoarthritis research in the Netherlands. Held at the historic Hotel Arsenaal, the day brought together clinicians, biomedical researchers, and early-career scientists to share insights and strengthen collaboration across the OA research ecosystem.

Our Mission: Early OA Detection Through Circulating Biomarkers
The CircBioCare project focuses on developing circulating epigenetic and protein biomarkers to enable the early diagnosis and personalised care of osteoarthritis. The OA Research Day offered a highly relevant platform to share our work with a diverse and engaged audience committed to improving the lives of OA patients.

Oral Presentation by Berta Cillero
CircBioCare researcher Berta Cillero delivered an oral presentation showcasing our latest findings and technological approaches to identifying non-invasive biomarkers in blood. Her talk emphasised the clinical potential of integrating mass spectrometry, epigenetics, and proteomics into early OA diagnostics, offering a pathway to more proactive, patient-centred care.

Posters from the CircBioCare Team
In addition to the oral presentation, several team members like Rimsha Saif presented posters covering a range of topics within the CircBioCare framework. The posters provided deeper insights into our methodologies and ongoing discoveries, and sparked valuable dialogue with fellow researchers.

A Platform for Collaboration and Growth in OA
The OA Research Day also featured an impressive lineup of keynote speakers, including:

  • Professor Mohit Kapoor, Co-Director of the Schroeder Arthritis Institute in Toronto.
  • Gerjo van Osch, professor of Connective Tissue Regeneration, dept of Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine at Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam; Gerjo is also vice-dean of research at Erasmus UMC.
  • Professor Keita Ito chairs the research group Orthopaedic Biomechanics at Eindhoven University and is also affiliated to the Orthopedics Department of University Medical Center Utrecht.
  • Nico Verdonschot professor of orthopedic biomechanics at Radboud University and also affiliated to the University of Twente.

We were inspired by the knowledge shared and encouraged by the event’s strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and support for early-career researchers to strengthen the Dutch osteoarthritis research ecosystem, ensuring a greater impact on the lives of patients with osteoarthritis.

Looking Ahead
The OA Research Day reinforced the importance of integrated approaches to osteoarthritis research. CircBioCare is excited to continue contributing to this mission with innovations that aim to detect OA earlier and improve patient outcomes.
